Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar o exercício da cidadania de catadores cooperados. As cooperativas de reciclagem, que são regidas pela economia solidária, são consideradas empreendimentos sociais, visto que buscam promover emancipação e cidadania. A cidadania é algo essencial para classe de catadores, uma vez que são pessoas excluídas socialmente. Atrelado a isto, por serem pessoas de baixa renda, acabam sendo discriminados pela população. A pesquisa empírica desenvolvida se caracteriza como descritiva, com uma abordagem qualitativa, a partir de um estudo de caso realizado em uma cooperativa de reciclagem. Foi selecionada a COOREPA – Cooperativa Recicla Paranaíba por ser a primeira cooperativa de reciclagem do Mato Grosso do Sul a se filiar a Organização das Cooperativas Brasileiras de Mato Grosso do Sul (OCB/MS). Foram realizadas entrevistas com treze cooperados abordando a caracterização da cooperativa, vida pessoal do catador cooperado, adesão por este trabalho, meio ambiente, saúde e riscos, dificuldades da profissão, melhorias no trabalho, visão sobre quem é o catador. São muitos os desafios para o exercício da cidadania, entretanto notam-se mais oportunidades para os catadores quando se organizam coletivamente, como por exemplo, em forma de cooperativa de reciclagem.
