Abstract

This research examined the role of recycling in the socio-economic inclusion of scavengers linked to cooperatives of garbage collection in the Federal District. The descriptive method focused on the revision of available literature and a quantitative survey. One hundred and sixteen people linked to six garbage collector cooperatives responded to the questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and comparative charts prepared in Excel. The survey results showed a significant improvement in items related to food, housing, recreation, sanitation and acquisition of durable goods This research observed other positive changes in socio-economic status of scavengers such as improvements in the type of housing and sanitation, food quality, the acquisition of goods and access to credit in shops and banks. It is concluded that the implementation of recycling contributes to the practice of selective collection, improving the quality and quantity of materials used for its reuse in the production process, strengthening and stimulating the work of the collectors organized into cooperatives and socio-economic inclusion of this portion of the population. Above all working together with cooperatives has led collectors to feel safe and respected in society.
