Abstract

Sustainable development in a given locality requires a set of actions that should be adopted by local governments together with civil society. This process is only possible through the community participation in discussions about its necessity and alternatives, as well as the meeting of consistent indicators and legitimized by local subjects. From this perspective, this paper aims at identifying the index of sustainable development in the municipality of Cabaceiras – Paraiba/Brazil from the weighting and ranking of social actors in the Sustainable Development Index Municipal Participative indicators. For this purpose, the methodology used was the calculation of the rate of municipal participative sustainable development (IDSMP) proposed by Candido, Vasconcelos e Souza (2010). This study is classified as exploratory and descriptive, conducted in the form of a case study, by means of literature and documentation support, field notes and non-participant observation. The results indicated that the sustainability index found for the city of Cabaceiras was 0.5570, rated at an acceptable level. However, it is important to note that from the perception of social actors, there is the need to establish guidelines and priorities which focus on indicators that make up the Cultural Dimension, which presented a critical level and the Economic Dimension that showed an alert level for sustainability characterizing bottlenecks to sustainable development in the municipality of Cabaceiras.
