Abstract

The population growth associated with man’s ability to transform materials has caused an imbalance in the natural cycle of the environment. It is noticed that the waste resulting from human activities, among them industrial activity responsible for processing of raw materials, require fi nal disposal, so as to generate minimum possible impact on the environment and public health. The Local Productive Arrangement (APL) of Caps located in Apucarana city (Brazil, state of Parana) has been responsable for approximately 60% of caps production in the country. According to Santos et al. (2008) the manufacturers generate 1029 tons of waste per year. The way the waste is used, often in garbage dumps, rivers, vacant lots besides risks to public health, shows as consequences the pollution of soil, air and contamination of surface and groundwater. Whereas the worldwide concern about the environment moves towards a consensus on joining a new style of development from a combination of economic effi ciency with social justice and ecological prudence, the introduction of corporate environmental actions is beyond the requirement of a market more conscious. By this context, this article presents the results of the Diagnóstico I by applying a structured questionnaire from the fourth stage of a extension project aimed to develop a program that included awareness and training of people involved in the process of industrialization, and mainly the final destination of the residuals from this production in order to promote the sustainability of the sector.
